Lucca

We were fortunate enough to go on another wonderful trip with our friends the Keeffers.  We left Opera about noon on Thursday and went to Lucca.  We had to drop off keys with the Firenze Zone leaders and had agreed to meet them in Lucca.  We found the train station in Lucca, had lunch and then met the zone leaders.  It was perfect timing.  Then we walked across the street and over the wall and then began to explore.

I am still very enthralled by the doors and knockers here in Italy.  I will spare you all of the pictures I take of them, but only show you the truly unique ones.  This is a very nice door.

But the knockers are something I have never seen before.

Inside the walls of Lucca is the old centro. lots of churches, and architectural details.

This is the duomo or largest church in Lucca

Here is another church in the center of Lucca that was really neat.

Inside this church was this crypt stone in the floor.  When you stepped on the skeleton the stone was a little loose and made a knocking sound as you stepped on and off. Just like knocking on tomb stones.

As we walked further on there was this great fountain.  This guy came up and filled his water bottles here.  Most of the towns in Italy offer free drinking water to their residents.  They usually have their choice of naturale or frizzante (carbonated).
.

This was another large church on the far side of Lucca.  It had a plain front and a fabulous mosaic on top.

Zoomed in on the mosaic.  Great detail

Back up on the wall that goes all around the city we saw this wonderful sculpture garden.

We could not get inside. so we just admired it from the wall..

Lucca had many towers, but one of the towers had large trees growing on top of it.  We did not have time to climb the tower.

We then walked past the old Public baths.  It is now a senior center.

How about the spokes on this bike?
